In 2001 Edgely Fire Department sold their
Ladder, a 1975 Imperial to Franklin Springs Fire Department in
Georgia. This ladder saved the life of the towns managing
director when the wall collapsed and the main was holding up the
roof of the structure while the station was being torn apart by
a tornado spun from hurricane Ivan. |

In one quick moment Thursday, September 16, Franklin
Springs, Georgia lost their fire station, police station and city
hall as an Ivan-spawned tornado hit the town. Mark Jerome who is
the fire and police chief for the town was at his home two miles
away recovering from surgery about 3:45 p.m. Through his radio he
could hear the screams of the EMS personnel across the street from
the building that houses his departments. |
|
| “They were getting hit,” Jerome said. He ran
outside to watch the twister just “sucking it all up.”
When he got into town, the building had lost most of one wall
with the ladder truck visible and holding up the roof, covered
with brick and stone. Inside, badly scarred and beat up were a
tanker under which the city manager had taken cover during the
worst of it, a 2002 E-1 pumper, 2004 quick attack truck and a
brush truck.
